Why is sun care the most important foundation in K-Beauty?
In K-Beauty, sun care is no longer just for summer vacations; it has become an essential final step of a daily 365-day skincare routine. Korean cosmetic brands focus on developing products that maintain powerful UV protection while offering a lightweight, moisturizing texture that feels like applying an essence. Recently, hybrid formulas that combine the benefits of chemical sunscreens (which absorb quickly without a white cast) and physical sunscreens (which are gentle on the skin) have gained immense popularity.
Selection criteria by skin type
- Oily skin: Choose oil-free sun gels or sun serums for a non-sticky finish.
- Dry skin: Use moisturizing sunscreens containing ceramides or hyaluronic acid to prevent dryness.
- Sensitive skin: Physical sunscreen products (based on zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) that have passed skin irritation tests are most suitable.
Core principles of daily sun care
When choosing a sunscreen, the first things to check are the SPF (UVB protection) and PA (UVA protection) ratings. For daily outdoor activities, products with SPF 50+ and PA++++ or higher are recommended. Additionally, sunscreen should be applied 20–30 minutes before heading out to allow it to adhere to the skin and form an effective protective barrier. A common oversight is the amount used; you should apply about two finger-lengths worth of product to the entire face to achieve the protection level stated on the label. If you are outdoors for an extended period, it is best to reapply every 2–3 hours. Recently, sun sticks and sun cushions have been released to make reapplication over makeup convenient and portable.
